3 Arts and Crafts Projects that the Elderly Should Try

March 02, 2017

As people get older, the activities they can participate in becomes limited. Due to existing medical problems or their inability to move as swiftly and effortlessly as they once did, the activities that they can engage in are narrowed down. However, this does not mean that they have to spend their days sitting down, bored out of their minds. Instead, older people are encouraged to explore other new activities that they can try. One of them is taking up different arts and crafts projects. This is something that even dementia caregivers in Chicago and all over the US recommend. Why? Because it is beneficial for the elderly since it keeps their minds sharp and engaged. Plus, it is a good cure for boredom. In some instances, this can even be used for socializing!

So do not be discouraged by the challenges that aging brings. Instead, try exploring other activities; for instance, you can try creating these three home crafts. They are not only fun and exciting to make, the finished products will be lovely decorations that you can proudly display in your home.

Apple Wreath

If you’re in love with the smell of freshly baked apple pie, then this is a house décor you need to work on right now. Thanks to the availability of apples year-round you don’t have to wait for an occasion to make this wreath.

To begin, make a mixture of lemon juice and salt; this is where you will be soaking your thinly sliced apple circles. Once they are evenly soaked it is time to coat them with your spice mix. The mix includes allspice, nutmeg, and cinnamons. If you want to make the wreath more aromatic, feel free to add other spices. After coating them evenly, it is time to bake these slices at 150 °F in the oven for six to seven hours.  Then, let them cool and harden before slipping the wire through them any way you want – you can fold them in half or keep it as the way it is.

Picture Frames

This can be a great gift to your family and friends for any occasion. There are various ways to do this; if you want, you can choose a theme first and make the frame as customized as possible. Or, you can also make something very simple with the use of random materials that you can find in your home. You can also try refurbishing old picture frames by getting a hot glue gun and using it to decorate the frame with hard candies, beads, or even nuts. Another thing that you can do is use leftover gift wrappers and ribbons to decorate the frame of your choice. If you’re feeling extra creative, try making a rope frame!

Painting Clay Pots

Painting is one of the most relaxing activities you can do. If you cannot enjoy the activities that you used to do, try painting clay pots. Start with basic designs and colors then, once you get the hang of it, you can try doing more intricate designs. If you want to apply a base coat, here’s a tip: use a sponge. When painting pots, using a sponge is the fastest way to cover every surface.

Once you are finished painting, make sure to apply multiple coats of water-based craft varnish. You can give the finished product as a gift to your loved ones or use it as a decoration in your favorite room.

Try these simple projects to help keep your mind engaged. After a few months, the amount of handcrafted items in your home can help give you a sense of achievement. So fight away boredom and get your art supplies now!
